(A123) Helen Keller Was Not a Hoax: Training Students to be Media Literacy Detectives

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule, view media, leave feedback and see who's attending!

Feedback form is now closed.

Inspired by the true story of a Virginia Beach high school Social Studies teacher whose students were convinced by social media that Helen Keller's achievements were just a hoax, this session will focus on innovative media literacy detective skills. Students can learn to verify claims, using critical thinking skills and digital tools to examine photos, videos, news sources, and, of course, the ubiquitous social media. You'll come away with strategies and tools to help your students combat media and personal bias, deep fakes and doctored photos and videos, persuasive techniques, propaganda, search algorithms, and more. [Please note that this session is also repeated at 1:00]
